Our project

SomnusCare is an innovative solution for obstructive sleep apnea, affecting over 936 million people globally. It combines a wearable pulse sensor, a smart bedside device, and a mobile app to monitor vital signs, detect respiratory events, and provide real-time emergency response. If breathing stops during sleep, the system alerts the user and, if unresponsive, contacts emergency services. The app tracks sleep quality, offers health insights, and connects users through a supportive community. Built with sustainable materials and designed for accessibility, SomnusCare offers a proactive, affordable, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional treatments, aiming to save lives and improve sleep health worldwide.SomnusCare is a three-part system composed of:1. A pulse-worn biometric sensor – lightweight, eco-friendly, and designed forcomfort. It measures key health parameters such as heart rate, oxygensaturation (SpO2), and respiratory effort using advanced components likethe MAX30102 and an ESP32 Mini microcontroller.2. A bedside device – which receives the biometric data wirelessly, processesit locally, and determines if a critical apnea event has occurred. In suchcases, it emits an immediate auditory and vibratory alert to wake the user.3. A mobile application – that stores, visualizes, and analyzes sleep datathrough cloud services like Firebase, while offering educational content, progress tracking, and a built-in support community. If a dangerous eventoccurs and the user does not respond within 30 seconds, the appautomatically contacts pre-selected emergency contacts. This seamless integration of hardware and software creates a unique valueproposition: real-time intervention with long-term data-driven health monitoring. This not only helps patients but also enables medical professionals to makeaccurate and timely decisions.

Our inspiration

Sleep is one of the most fundamental biological functions necessary for human health and survival. Yet, in modern life, sleep disorders are often misunderstood or ignored—especially sleep apnea, a condition that disrupts breathing during sleep and affects nearly 1 in 10 people globally. The SomnusCare initiative was born from the desire to respond to this urgent public health challenge through technological innovation, compassion, and sustainability. Our mission is not only to monitor physiological indicators during sleep but to offer a real-time emergency intervention system, aiming to prevent potentially fatal episodes and improve overall quality of life.
