Exploring ML: considering bias

Lesson 5 of 8

CreateAI, MakeCode

11-14 yrs

This is the fifth of eight lessons teaching about AI and ML (machine learning). It is an unplugged lesson examining students’ projects so far and thinking about bias.

Students consider how their AI exercise timer data could be more accurate and are guided to add another action to ensure their are no gaps in their dataset.

This lesson download includes required and optional materials, see lists below.

Students will need to complete a paper or digital copy of the Consider bias worksheet in pairs or individually.

Required materials for this lesson:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides that include a video
  • Consider bias worksheet

Optional resources included in this lesson download:

  • Transcript of video Bias in AI

Key learning:

  • I understand that bias in AI tools can have an impact on users.
  • I understand that bias in AI comes from inaccurate data and gaps in data.
  • I know what questions to ask to examine an AI tool for bias.

AI literacy:

How machines learn

Human role in AI design

Understanding AI

Data literacy:

Analysing data

Data bias
