In 2025, keyboard navigation arrived in Microsoft MakeCode for micro:bit, supporting learners with fine motor challenges. In 2026, we reached another major milestone – screen reader support for block-based coding.
Now we need your help to test the new accessibility features and give us your feedback.
Who this survey is for
Anyone is welcome to try our accessibility features, but our survey is specifically for:
- Educators, parents, and carers supporting learners aged 8-25 who use assistive technology.
- Young learners (aged 8-25) who use assistive technology, completing the survey with adult permission and support.
We especially want to hear about experiences with:
- Visual impairments (using screen readers, refreshable braille displays, screen magnifiers, high-contrast settings or other software adaptation).
- Dexterity or fine motor impairments (using switches, eye gaze, voice control, or keyboard-only navigation).
How to take part (2 simple steps)
Step 1: Try out the MakeCode editor and our accessibility support resources
Before answering the survey, try building a program using blocks (not JavaScript or Python) in the updated MakeCode editor:
- Explore our support resources on the MakeCode accessibility support page.
- Open the MakeCode for micro:bit editor. (If using an offline version of MakeCode, ensure you have the most recent version - version 9 or above, updated 13th July 2026. You can check the version number using MakeCode Settings/ About).
- Try navigating the workspace and creating a program using your keyboard setup or assistive technology.
Step 2: Share your feedback
The survey opens on Thursday 1st October 2026.
Once you have tried MakeCode editor and our accessibility support resources, return to this page on Thursday 1st October 2026 to share your feedback. The survey closes on Monday 16th November 2026.
As a thank you, survey respondents in Canada, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom, United States of America; and Uruguay, can opt into a prize draw. T&Cs apply.
Important notes for educators and adults
- Safeguarding and permission: For online safety and data protection, an adult (parent, carer, or educator) must provide consent for a young person to take part.
- Educators testing with multiple young learners: Please submit one survey per learner as their needs, setup, and experience are unique. Each valid entry will be submitted into the prize draw (T&Cs apply) if you opt in and are eligible, increasing your chances of winning. We deeply appreciate the extra time this takes!
- Please only complete the survey if you have:
- Used some of resources at Microsoft MakeCode accessibility support.
- Tried the MakeCode editor using assistive technology or keyboard navigation.
