Our project
Students designed a wristband radio equipped with heat sensors to protect individuals working in high-risk, high-heat environments. Originally inspired by oil refinery workers who face dangerous conditions on the job, the device alerts wearers when their body temperature rises to unsafe levels, helping prevent heat-related illness. Recognizing the broader impact of extreme heat, students have since expanded the scope of their invention to support elderly community members and others at risk of heat stroke. To inform their design, students collaborated with a Community Partner from the oil refinery industry, who shared firsthand insights into the hazardous conditions workers face, particularly around excessive heat exposure. This partnership inspired the team to develop a practical, life-saving tool that combines safety, accessibility, and compassion—addressing both occupational risks and the growing community-wide threat of rising temperatures.
Our inspiration
Students worked with a Community Partner who worked within the oil refinery industry and shared information about the dangerous conditions that individuals experienced, especially as it related to high temperatures. Students were inspired to ensure the safety of these workers and invented their device. Since that initial concept, they've continued to expand their invention to all individuals at risk of heat stroke.
