Our project

The “Equilibreans Flood Defense System,” winner of the Moonshot Award at Demo Day Houston, was developed in response to personal experiences with flooding from Hurricane Harvey. Partnering with a community member, the team designed an affordable, automated aluminum flood barrier that can rotate and rise to protect homes from flood damage. The device includes a micro:bit sensor system, a programmable logic control unit, and a mobile app that alerts users when flooding is detected.

Our inspiration

Students were inspired to create this project after connecting with many individuals in their community, including family members, that shared what it was like to lose their belongings or homes due to Hurricane Harvey.
