Our project

The device includes:

  • Micro:bit kit
  • Crocodile clips
  • Floating house model

How it works: The system has 3 warning levels. When the water goes above the highest safe level (Level 3), the sensor sends a signal to the micro:bit to trigger an SOS warning with sound.

  • Floating house:
    • Made from recycled materials (popsicle sticks, disposable chopsticks, plastic bottles, water pipes, etc.).
It rises with the water level, using the principle of a hydraulic cylinder.
  • Water level sensor:
    • Function: Measures water level in real time.
  • micro:bit board:
    • Function: Acts as the “brain” of the system.
    • How it works: It receives signals from the sensor and activates the warning system.
  • Warning system:
    • Function: Sends alerts to local people about flood risks.
    • Method: Sends messages through the micro:bit.

Future development:

  • SMS alerts: Micro:bit can connect to a GSM module to send text messages to people’s phones.
  • Mobile app: A future app could let users register for alerts and see water levels on a map.
  • Weather data integration:
    • Function: Combine data from local weather sources to predict flood risks.
    • Operation: Based on expected rainfall and tidal conditions, the system can provide more accurate forecasts for the public.
  • Community sensor network:
    • Function: Create a network of sensors installed in multiple locations across the community.
    • Operation: Data from these sensors will be shared and analyzed to deliver more precise flood warnings.
  • Community feedback system:
    • Function: Set up a communication channel where local people can send feedback about flooding situations.
    • Operation: This gives people the chance to take part in disaster risk management and helps improve the accuracy of flood information.

This system helps people stay prepared for floods and raises awareness in the community. It also reduces the damage caused by natural disasters.

Our inspiration

There are many sources of inspiration for students' micro:bit projects.
Real-world problems like climate change and pollution have inspired many students to use micro:bit to create smart solutions.

Some students are inspired by their personal interests and passions, such as games, music, or sports. They use micro:bit to make these experiences better.

Finally, simple curiosity and the desire to learn new things also encourage students to explore what micro:bit can do and develop unique projects.
