Our project

We designed a "smart traffic light" to provide citizens with special needs with more considerate and safe crossing times.

Citizens with special needs include: people pushing baby strollers, the elderly, people with disabilities and the visually impaired. These types of people often take longer to cross the road, so our work uses artificial intelligence lenses. If these types of people are detected, the green light time will be extended.

In addition, we added servo motors under artificial intelligence and used the face tracking function to allow the camera to track people and the distribution of pedestrians on the road, hoping to affect everyone on the sidewalk.

There is a koi artificial intelligence lens under the traffic light, and it can move according to the distribution of passers-by. Generally, only one artificial intelligence lens is added to the traffic light. The cost is not high and the needs of different people can be catered for. We used different photos for testing and used micro:bit to display the green light time. In the initial testing phase, the accuracy of distinguishing various types of people was not high. This may be because we did not take enough photos of each category, so we had to re-shoot multiple times. We understand that the artificial intelligence lens needs to have enough photos during the learning phase. Only with the number of photos can the accuracy of the lens be improved.

While catering for the needs of special persons, we must also take into account the overall city's transportation network and the needs of ordinary people. In a sustainable society, the harmonious development between people is very important, so we will only extend it to a limited extent, and the extension time required for different categories will also be different to parallel the normal people and people. The needs of others.

Our inspiration

Hong Kong is a developed city with well-connected traffic. There are traffic lights everywhere to allow pedestrians to cross the road safely. However, the time setting of the traffic lights will be determined according to different road conditions. In places with heavy traffic, pedestrians are allowed to cross the road. The green light time will be shorter. But for pedestrians, whether you are an elderly or disabled person with limited mobility, a child with special needs, or a pregnant woman, if the green lights are all at the same time, it will often make them confused and dangerous. Therefore, we designed a "smart traffic light" to provide citizens with special needs with more considerate and safe crossing times.
