SDG 15 Life on Land

Our project

We got super excited about the do your :bit challenge! We chose the SG13 Life on Land goal and decided to grow plants without any soil using a hydroponics system.

Instead of soil, we use special water full of nutrients to help our plants grow. We wanted to see if we could use our micro:bits, to make sure our plants are happy and healthy. We put together some 3D-printed towers and we used Lego to support and hold the micro:Bits in place. The project was broken down into smaller parts, and we used our micro:Bits to help us add nutrients and check the temperature, humidity, light, pH levels, electrical conductivity and water levels. All these things are super important to make a hydroponics system work. We made the water go up through the towers and drip down over the plant roots with a pump that's powered by a battery. We plan to use a mini solar panel to keep that battery charged, so it’s super eco-friendly!

Our inspiration

We were inspired to create this micro:bit hydroponics system because we wanted to see if there was a more sustainable way to grow plants in our world. We know that new ideas are important to save the environment. By using the micro:bit, we want to make hydroponic gardening easier and show that even small changes can make a big difference for our world. Our project is about finding an eco-friendly way to grow plants, and we hope it will inspire others to think of cool ways to help the Earth.
