Our project

Students from an elementary school of Chios, a small school in an island right in the middle of the Aegean Sea participated in the micro:bit challenge: How is the temperature right above seal level? How is the temperature right on shore?

Using recycled materials, we created a prototype floating device. Our device needed to be able to float, maintain stability, and provide a safe environment for a micro:bit controller. We got to work and our excitement was tremendous!

We kept the code as simple as possible, for a variety of reasons. Our micro:bits were used as strictly scientific devices that needed to get the work done, retrieve original data (air temperature at various points both at coast and air temperature at sea levels ) and transmit them wirelessly to the team of scientists waiting on coast or at the boat.

It was nice for our team to work together on something that united all kids for a common goal. We took plastic bottles that are thrown in the trash every day and we used them for something new, like building our prototype boat and engage in science!

Our inspiration

What did the students think about their project:

"I wish we had more sensors & more micro:bits to be able to control it movement on sea, making it wirelessly operational, but our first prototype model was perfect for a beginning!"

"It was the most exciting field trip I‘ve ever been!"

"...it was exciting to see data transmitted and being displayed on our team’s micro:bit."

"We were all excited and kept shouting loud the numbers received on our team’s micro:bit."

"Seeing the data received wirelessly was one the most exciting experiences!"
