Internet Safety and Personal Information

The code editors we link to will be a home to the creative endeavours of budding digital champions all over the world. For this to be a pleasant and safe experience for all children, we need your help in making sure internet safety is a priority. Please don’t include any personally identifiable information within your own coding scripts and any supporting text – and please make sure that any children you’re responsible for, know this too. If you do approve scripts for publication, you must be sure that the text in the coding script doesn’t contain any personal information that could be viewed by anyone visiting our website.

Terms Of Use

These terms of use tell you how you may use the micro:bit website and any associated software, including all updates, support, and content that display or link to this website.(We refer to these collectively as the “micro:bit services”.)

These terms of use sometimes refer to the Micro:bit Educational Foundation as "Foundation", “we,” “us” or “our”.

If you have any questions about these terms of use or your use of the micro:bit services then you may find the answer at the Help page. If you cannot find the answer there, or if you have any comments or complaints about the micro:bit services please contact the us.

You may use the micro:bit services only if you agree to these terms of use. If you do not agree, please do NOT use the micro:bit services. These terms of use limit the our liability and disclaim warranties for the micro:bit services as permitted by law. These terms of use also explain how your contributions to the micro:bit services will be used by the Foundation. Please read these sections of the terms of use carefully.

Should I read any other information or terms?

Please also read the micro:bit privacy policy which explains how we handle any information about you when using this service. The privacy policy form part of these terms of use. If there is any inconsistency between the privacy policy and these terms of use, these terms of use will prevail.

  1. Your use of the micro:bit services. You may use the micro:bit services only if you: comply with the laws, rules and regulations that a reasonable person ordinarily would when using the internet; comply with the micro:bit terms of use, any codes of conduct or other notices we provide; keep any micro:bit services account password that belongs to you secret; and promptly notify the Foundation if you learn of a security or data breach related to the micro:bit services. In using the micro:bit services, you may not: break the house rules; upload videos or images; engage, or allow others to engage in, facilitate, or further unlawful conduct; use the micro:bit services in an intentionally harmful or disruptive way; misrepresent the source of anything you post or upload, including impersonation of another individual or entity; use any portion of the micro:bit services as a destination linked from any unsolicited bulk messages or unsolicited commercial messages; publish, post, upload, distribute or disseminate any inappropriate, pornographic, profane, defamatory, obscene, indecent or unlawful information; use the micro:bit services to threaten, stalk, defame, defraud, degrade, victimise or intimidate an individual or group of individuals for any reason; including on the basis of age, gender, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, race or religion; or incite or encourage anyone else to do so; upload, or otherwise make available, material protected by intellectual property laws, unless you own or control the rights thereto or have received all the necessary consents to do the same, including, but not limited to, copyright or trade mark laws (or by rights of privacy or publicity); use any automated process or service to access and/or use the micro:bit services (such as techniques like a BOT, a spider, periodic caching of information stored by the Foundation or “meta-searching”); use any unauthorised means to modify or re-route, or attempt to modify or re-route, the micro:bit services; damage, disable, overburden, or impair the micro:bit services(or the network(s) connected to the micro:bit services) or interfere with anyone’s use and enjoyment of the micro:bit services; or re-sell or re-distribute the micro:bit services, or any part of the micro:bit services. In using the micro:bit services (i) you understand that you may create contributions that can be stored locally and which you may choose to share with others and which the Publishing Editor may publish on the micro:bit website; and (ii) you agree that all contributions created by you using the micro:bit services are available for others to: freely use without attribution on a non-commercial basis; share, copy and redistribute the contribution in any medium or format on a non-commercial basis; and adapt, remix, transform and build upon on a non-commercial basis. In addition, in using the micro:bit services to create contributions, you grant the Foundation a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual licence for the Foundation to use, reproduce, modify, communicate to the public, create derivative works, display, perform, sub-license and distribute the contributions in any way that the Foundation requires.
  2. How the Foundation may change these terms of use. The Foundation may update these terms of use from time to time so please review the relevant pages regularly. If you access this micro:bit services, you agree to be bound by whichever version of the terms of use is in force at such time.
  3. How can the Foundation change or stop making the micro:bit services available to me and what happens if it does so? Changes to the micro:bit services We may change the micro:bit services or delete features at any time and for any reason. If we believe the changes will affect your user experience, we will provide information regarding the changes at the point of access to the micro:bit services. The Foundation's right to stop making the micro:bit services available to you The Foundation may stop making all or any part of the micro:bit services available to you with immediate effect and without notice if: you are in breach of the house rules or these terms of use and/or in the Foundation’s sole opinion we believe you are using the micro:bit services inappropriately (for instance harassing or causing distress or inconvenience to any other person) or in any way that may constitute derogatory treatment of the Foundation or might bring the Foundation into disrepute or in a way that might be considered to be prejudicial to the image of the Foundation or micro:bit; you breach these terms of use in a way that cannot be corrected, or you fail to correct a breach within a reasonable period of time if the Foundation asks you to do so; or there is, in the Foundation’s reasonable opinion, any reason why the micro:bit services must be withdrawn. What happens if the Foundation cancels the micro:bit services or stops making the micro:bit services available to me? If the Foundation stops making the micro:bit services available to you, any contributions you have created on the micro:bit services might not be available to you later. You are responsible for taking necessary steps to back up your own data. You may be asked by the Foundation to delete data downloaded by you from the micro:bit services to your device(s).
  4. Creating and sharing contributions. You can create contributions using the micro:bit services or other applications that may become available as part of the micro:bit services. Publishing Editors may choose whether to make such contributions (limited only to those based on contributions you obtain through the micro:bit services) available online, to the public. In due course, as part of the micro:bit services, Publishing Editors may be able to submit content such as lessons and tutorials through the micro:bit services for use in connection with contributions. If you share contributions with others on the micro:bit services, in either public or shared areas, then you understand that those people (like anyone else) may use those contributions. Please note that in using the services, you agree that your contributions can be made available as outlined in section 1 of these terms of use so be aware that all contributions via the micro:bit services, whether published or not, are created on the basis that they are free for others to use and that no compensation will be paid for their use. Please note that the Foundation is under no obligation to use any contributions and we may limit the size or quantity of any contributions or delete them altogether. The Foundation is not responsible for the content of any contributions. Where you are interested in using existing contributions that have been created (and may have been published) on the micro:bit services, the decision to copy, modify, run or otherwise make use of any such contributions is your own. You understand and will also inform children, that posting personal data, sharing contributions that infringes others’ intellectual property rights (including, but not limited to, copyright, patent or trade mark) is in breach of these terms of use. Please be aware that the Foundation may refuse to publish your contribution and may remove your contribution from the micro:bit services at any time, if it contradicts these terms of use or for any reason. The Foundation does not permit uploading of images or video via the micro:bit services. You understand that the Foundation does not control or endorse the contributions that you and others post or provide on the micro:bit services. Except for material that we otherwise own and license to you, we do not claim ownership of the contributions that you post or provide on the micro:bit services.
  5. Copyright in contributions. Any copyright in contributions which are published to the micro:bit services belong to the original creator. If the creator is a child then the copyright belongs to that child. By providing a contribution to the micro:bit services, you warrant that the contribution is not subject to any rights of a third party (including without limitation, any copyright, patent or trade mark rights of any person). You confirm that your contribution (including contributions to be submitted by the Publishing Editor) is your own original work or the original work of the child or work derived from the micro:bit website (as applicable) and is not defamatory or unlawful and does not infringe anyone else's rights (including privacy rights) and that it complies with these terms of use. You also confirm that contributions are made in a non-commercial capacity and such contributions do not unfairly promote or further any business activities and have not been contributed for commercial gain.
  6. Respect copyright. Please respect the rights of creators. Content such as code, pictures, text and video may be protected by copyright. You may not share other people’s content unless you own the rights, have permission from the owner, or such sharing is otherwise legal. Licence to share your script and content with the Foundation and other users You understand if you publish a contribution to the micro:bit services it will be available for others to use as outlined in section 1 of these terms of use on the microbit website. If you do not want to grant the Foundation and all others permission to use such contributions, in accordance with the terms of use, please do not use the micro:bit services.   7. Will the Foundation be moderating the micro:bit website? Any contributions you make may be moderated by the Foundation which means they may be reviewed, edited and/or removed. The Foundation reserves the right to remove any of your contributions if the Foundation believes that they do not comply with the terms of use. We remind you not to share information that others could use to harm you. We encourage you to be aware of and exercise strict control over content posted online.
  8. Links to third party websites. The micro:bit services may contain links to websites. These third party websites are not under the Foundation’s control. If the Foundation has included these links in the micro:bit services, we provide them to you as a convenience only. The inclusion of these links is not an endorsement by the Foundation of any third party website, service or product. The Foundation reserves the right to disable links to any third party website that you post on the micro:bit services.
  9. How does the Foundation use my personal information? You can read how the Foundation uses your personal information in the micro:bit privacy policy which forms part of the terms of use.
  10. Feedback. If you give us feedback, you give the Foundation, without charge, the right to use and share your feedback with other users and online. These rights survive after you stop using the micro:bit services unless you tell us otherwise.
  11. Our notices to you. We may provide information to you: by e-mail at the e-mail address you specified when you signed up for the micro:bit services, or by access to the micro:bit website that will be designated in an e-mail notice sent to you at the time the information is available; or by access to the micro:bit website. Notices provided to you via e-mail will be deemed given and received on the transmission date of the e-mail.
  12. What are the Foundation's legal obligations to me and how do the terms limit the Foundation's liability? The basis on which Foundation makes the micro:bit services available to you The Foundation does not guarantee that the micro:bit services will always be available or be uninterrupted, timely, secure or free from bugs, viruses, errors and omissions. The Foundation reserves its right to modify, suspend or discontinue all or part of the micro:bit services without giving you any notice. Any commentary, opinions or other materials included in the micro:bit services are not intended to amount to advice on which you should rely. Types of loss or damage the Foundation is not responsible for The Foundation is not responsible for the following kinds of loss or damage which may arise from your use of the micro:bit services: loss or damage suffered by you or someone else when the Foundation complies with the terms of use; loss or damage which is caused by the Foundation when it does not comply with the terms of use but which the Foundation and you could not anticipate nor expect to happen when you started using the micro:bit services; any loss which is indirect or a side effect of the main loss or damage and which the Foundation and you could not anticipate nor expect to happen when you started using the micro:bit services, for instance if you lose revenue or salary, profit, opportunity or reputation; any loss of data or damage to your device or software; any loss or damage because of events beyond the Foundation's control, such as an act of God, accident, fire, lockout, strike or other official or unofficial labour dispute, civil commotion, decision of the Foundation Trust, rule or order or act of Government or other act or event beyond the reasonable control of the Foundation. The Foundation will not be liable to you for any damages related to the micro:bit services which arise as a result of: content (including code) on third party internet sites, third party program or third party conduct; viruses or other disabling features that affect your access to or use of the micro:bit services; incompatibility between the micro:bit services and other services, software and hardware; delays or failures you may have in initiating, conducting or completing any transmissions or transactions in connection with the micro:bit services in an accurate or timely manner; and claims for breach of contract, breach of warranty, guarantee or condition, strict liability, negligence, or other tort. Nothing in the terms of use excludes or limits either the Foundation’s or your liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence or for fraud.
  13. Copyright notices. Any content on the micro:bit services that has not been created using the services is © Copyright Micro:bit Educational Foundation or Foundation partners.
  14. What happens if any part of the terms of use is found to be ineffective? If any part of the terms of use is found to be illegal, invalid or otherwise unenforceable by a court or regulator, then, where required, that part shall be deleted from the terms of use and the remaining parts of the terms of use will continue to be enforceable.
  15. Can third parties infer any rights from these terms of use? The terms of use do not create or infer any rights that are enforceable by any person who is not party to the terms of use.
  16. Can I transfer my rights in these terms of use? You may not assign, sub-license or otherwise transfer any of your rights and obligations in the terms of use to any other person.
  17. Gifts. Any gifts the Foundation offers to individuals as thanks for participating in feedback surveys are offered without bias, meaning that the gift will be given whatever feedback the individual provides.
  18. What happens if there is a dispute arising out of the terms of use? Any disputes arising out of the terms of use will be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of England and Wales (or the laws of Scotland or Northern Ireland if you live there). If you choose to bring proceedings in connection with the terms of use, you must do so in the courts of England and Wales, unless you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, in which case you can choose to bring proceedings there.

do your :bit is a global micro:bit challenge for 8 - 18 year olds to test their imagination and combine creativity and technology to come up with solutions for the Global Goals by tackling the issues we’re facing today. 

In 2022, the challenge is open from Tuesday 11 January until Friday 14 July.

UK Primary donation - Terms & Conditions

INTRODUCTION

1. By completing the registration form and entering this giveaway, the participant confirms that their application complies with the criteria below and agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions (these "Terms") in full. All registration instructions form part of these Terms.

This giveaway is only available to residents in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales who, at the date on which they enter this giveaway, are employed as teachers at government funded primary schools in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales.

2. The giveaway gift that is available is the following: a micro:bit Club pack (10 x microbits, 10 x battery cage and 10 x USB cables) (the "Pack"). There are a total of 2,200 Packs available.

3. Entry to the giveaway opens at 10am (UK time) on 28th February 2022 and closes on the earliest of: (a) at 5pm (UK time) on 30 April 2022; or (b) when 2,220 eligible participants have been awarded a Pack. Once 2,220 eligible participants have been awarded a Pack, the registration form will no longer be available to complete. No entries received after the closing time will be eligible to receive a Pack.

4. No purchase is necessary to register. However, in order to enter the giveaway, you must have an Internet connection.

HOW TO REGISTER

5. In order to enter the giveaway, you must register via the registration form. It is your responsibility to ensure that all details that you enter into the registration form are correct.

6. Any school may apply for up to two packs, only one entry is required or permitted per school, a different teacher contact will be required for each pack requested. Eg. If you request 2 x packs, 2 x teacher contacts will be required.

7. Upon completion of the registration form you will receive an automated e-mail stating your registration has been received. This is not confirmation that your registration has been successful. If you are awarded a Pack in accordance with section 4 above and section 9 below, you will be notified by the Micro:bit Educational Foundation by 30 April 2022 on whether your application was successful. Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.

THE PACKS

8. The Packs will be allocated as follows:

8.1. Proportionally across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales

8.2. Initially to schools identified by education partners as meeting the elegibility criteria

8.3. To teachers who took part in the UK Primary research study

8.4. On a first come first served basis

9. The Packs will be delivered between 21st March 2022 and 6th June 2022.

10. We will not be responsible and it will not be possible for us to replace any Packs that are lost in transit.

11. In the unlikely event that you receive a faulty pack, please contact info@microbit.org so we can help arrange a return and replacement.

CONDITIONS

12. There is no cash alternative available; the Pack is as stated and no alternatives are available.

13. We reserve the right at any time, in our absolute discretion, to:

13.1. verify the eligibility of any participant (including their age, place of residence); and

13.2. disqualify any participant found to be abusing or tampering with the operation of the giveaway or entering using fraudulent means, or who we believe to have acted in breach of these Terms.

14. If you are successful in this giveaway and a recipient of a Pack, we may use your surname and county of residence to report the recipients of the giveaway to our partners. Please contact us if you do not want to make your details available in this manner (if so, please note that we may nevertheless be obliged to still provide the information to the Advertising Standards Authority or equivalent regulator on request).

15. No entries from agents, third parties, syndicated entries or those made using methods such as a computer macro, script or the use of automated devices are permitted and no bulk entries.

16. All costs and expenses not included within the giveaway are the responsibility of the recipients of the Packs.

LIABILITY

17. If we fail to comply with these Terms, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breach of these Terms or our negligence, but we are not responsible for any loss or damage that is not foreseeable. Loss or damage is foreseeable if it was an obvious consequence of our breach or if it was contemplated by you and us at the time that you entered this giveaway.

18. Except as otherwise required by applicable law, we accept no responsibility or liability for any entry or claim which for technical or other reasons, when you are submitting your registration form, is unsuccessful, incomplete, lost, damaged, corrupted or misdirected.

19. This giveaway and the Packs are intended only for educational purposes and private use. Each entrant agrees not to use the giveaway or any Pack for any commercial or business purposes (unless educational) and we have no liability to any entrant for any loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption, or loss of business opportunity.

GENERAL

20. When using the Pack, please always follow the safety guidance provided with the Pack or on the website - https://microbit.org/guide/safety-advice/

21. We reserve the right to extend, withdraw, alter or suspend this giveaway or these Terms at any time if circumstances beyond our control make this unavoidable.

22. Data that is collected from or about participants will be used in accordance with our Privacy Policy, a copy of which can be found athttps://microbit.org/privacy/.

23. These Terms are governed by English law.This means that each registration for the giveaway, and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection therewith (including non-contractual disputes or claims) will be governed by English law.

24. You can bring legal proceedings in respect of the giveaway and these Terms in the English courts. If you live in Scotland you can bring legal proceedings in respect of the giveaway and these Terms in either the Scottish or the English courts.
