背景

It is assumed that you have first completed the Non-communicable disease introductory lesson.

介紹

In this lesson students consider the importance of regular exercise to help to prevent heart disease and investigate the effect of different types of activity on their heart rate before analysing and presenting the data.

Some experience of using spreadsheets to enter and analyse data is assumed, though additional time can be spent on this easily if necessary.

活動

Planning a heart rate investigation

  • Ask students to think/pair/share how they could investigate the effect of different activities on the heart rate.
  • Decide on the method you will use (ie collecting pulse rates for 15 seconds during different activities and multiplying by 4) and the activities you will undertake (suggestions on slide 5).
  • Ensure students know how they can collect their pulse and how to record the data (there is a spreadsheet and printable worksheet you can download and adapt for your class).

Undertaking the experiment

  • Set up activity stations in a suitable location (using the printed cards on slides 8 to 12 if helpful).
  • Ensure pairs have the means to record the data and timers and give them enough time to complete their experiment.
  • Once all data has been collected, ensure it is entered onto the master spreadsheet ready for analysis.

Analysing and presenting data

  • Ensure students have access to the spreadsheet and invite them in pairs to look at the data and spot any patterns and possible anomalies. Discuss these as a class, dealing with any misconceptions and drawing out points of comparison and interest.
  • Either independently in their pairs, or being led by you, ask students to analyse the data using graphs where appropriate and to complete the data analysis worksheet.
  • Alternatively, you could ask students to create a short screen recording where they talk through the data and what it shows.

課程總結

  • Use the questions on the worksheet as a guide to encourage students to reflect on their learning.
  • 回顧學習目標(投影片 7)。

延伸 / 回家作業

  • The data worksheet could be completed for homework if time is short.
  • Students could take their pulse rate during other activities (e.g. before and after playing sport, or when playing an instrument or walking to school) to monitor the impact on their heart rate.
  • You could extend learning about the heart to include students ‘acting out’ how the heart works or to include more maths and creation/analysis of graphs if you wish.

區辨

線上支援:

  • Supportive pairings can be helpful and students should be given extra help with collecting, recording and analysing the data where necessary.

延伸 / 挑戰活動:

Challenge students to spot less than obvious patterns and anomalies in the data and to analyse and present the data accurately in depth.

機會評估:

  • Informal assessment through questioning and during investigation.
  • Formal assessment of worksheets if wished.
